Stephen King on Stephenie Meyer

A few weeks back, Stephen King commented on the Rowling/Meyer phenomenon. I found it amusing, considering this class' obsession with both authors. I suppose the Harry Potter fans should feel vindicated now.

"...I think that I serve that purpose [of influencing] some writers, and that’s a good thing. Both Rowling and Meyer, they’re speaking directly to young people. ... The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good."

And this is completely unrelated to anything, but since I know about Mr. Duncan's fetish for Elijah Wood, I figured he would find this video particularly distressing:

(I'm going through a Eurodance phase right now, so forgive me)

  1. I totally agree. I am adddicted to both Harry Potter and Twilight, but I would never, ever, ever, dare to compare J.K. Rowling and Stephanie Meyer as writers. Not even the same playing field. Rowling is a genius. An actual genius. Those Cullens are just so lovable though :)

  2. I have personally never read Twilight, therefore I cannot judge, so I won't give my less than satisfactory assumptions regarding it. I do know that I love Stephen King, and I love J.K. Rowling. I read this article about a week ago and I DID feel vindicated. The funny thing is, I don't know why. It's like I feel I have to defend Harry Potter from being grouped in the same category as Twilight. But why? Perhaps I'm too obsessed, but I think the series beyond anything Twilight will ever be. Meyer just seems like one step away from the whole "Single White Vampire" kind of thing. But then again, perhaps I am indeed missing out. I'd simply prefer for HP and Twilight not to be mentioned together comparatively. They only share the common ground of being located in fantasy genre.

And I need to stop now. It seems I've more than found my soapbox to stand on...yeesh. See what I mean about being defensive? It just jumps out!

  3. I agree, they should not be compared. They are just two completely different stories, they don't belong in the same category.

  4. I feel like one of the main reasons they are associated together is simply because they are both popular female writers of fantasy. It's kind of sad because there are so many fantasy writers, but these women are lumped together. I agree with your guys, Rowling is just out of Meyer's league. I really like Meyer's story though and am I fan of the books.

  6. I mean, I knew in my own heart of hearts that JKR was a true genius, but to hear someone as profound and ::gasp:: dare I say it, even a bigger legend than JKR, Mr. King himself, give her such a compliment truly proves that not only has Rowling been accepted by her millions of public fans, but also by other, more distinguished, writers of her genre. I think that there really can be no higher reward than receiving such high praise from basically all ends.

Here is a link from King's rotation column in Entertainment Weekly I dug up that I remembered reading a few years ago when the last installment of the series was released. The bit on King uncovering the 'secret' to Rowling's novels is particularly worth the read:

...And Elijah Wood is a sexy beast.

  7. Dan, I do indeed find that video distressing, but not half as distressing as reading the phrase "Mr. Duncan's fetish for Elijah Wood."
