My Possible Paper Topics

I have been jugging two ideas for paper topics the past few days and was just wanting to get some input on them. The first goes back to my ghouls post, I think it would be fun to compare other characters in the "The Graveyard Book" with the characters of the world of Harry Potter. It's possible. Also I was thinking about some very, very broad movie comparisons I have been making with the stories of Kelly Link. They have very broad connections but it might be interesting to try and connect them. Some of the movies/ books include Beetlejuice, Pet Semetary, The Shining, and I Am Legend. Again the connections are very vague but I make them somehow. Just wanted to get some opinions.

  1. Katie,

I really like your first topic idea. I was considering taking a similar path myself, but I'm not sure yet. I feel there is more to say and more comparisons to make between Harry Potter and the Graveyard Book. I feel that you could even bring in some of the elements from Link's books and compare those as well.

I think that the ghoul part is especially interesting, with such vast differences between the two books.

I also think that it would be interesting for you to consider the differing aspects of ghosts themselves between the two novels. You could take into consideration how people, after they die, choose to live their afterlife. We know that in Harry Potter, people have the option to remain in the physical realm as ghosts, or they can pass on from this world. The ghosts in Graveyard Book either chose to be active and roam the graveyard, or they chose to sleep to in their graves permanently. Can this be viewed as a similar choice? And what makes people choose the choices they made? Are their benefits, per say, to be an "active" ghost?

You could also consider the idea of werewolves in both novels. In Harry Potter, such creatures are not really accepted by society and don't really serve any purpose, per say. Being a werewolf is more of a condition than a blessing here; normal people can be infected. In Graveyard Book, granted, the history of the werewolf is not covered, but the overall concept of being a werewolf seems to have more respect. Miss Lupesco is not just average, and she uses her abilities to fight off danger, taking a more active position.

I don't know if any of this helped, i feel some only makes sense in my mind, but hopefully I did something. This paper topic you chose seems very interesting.

  2. Katie, Natalie covered your first idea pretty well, but tell us more about which Link stories remind you of which movies.

  3. I going to use the first topic now but here are the movie/book comparisons I have been making:

    The Great Divorce/Beetlejuice
    Stone Animals/The Shining
    The Wrong Grave/Pet Semetary
    The Surfer/I Am Legend

Again these are extremely broad connections, I just have been noticing them when I am reading. With the last one, I watched "I Am Legend" for the first time this weekend and later I thought about "The Surfer" so it was the complete opposite of the first three.
