The Labyrinth vs. the Graveyard

In Pan's Labyrinth, the final scene of Ofelia alive where she is running through the Labyrinth and it opens for her to allow her to move to the middle faster made me sort of think of Bod moving through fixtures in the Graveyard at will. Both the Graveyard and the Labyrinth acted in a differing way in protecting the children. The main difference being that Bod was allowed to live while Ofelia had to die, even though her death took her to her Utopia.

  1. Also, a lot of the end of Labyrinth plays into the idea that Ofelia is caught in her own imaginings, easing the pain of her death. Given how Bod also loses the ability to see or communicate with the ghosts after he kills the Jack, it's an interesting comment on the nature of "reality."

  2. That is a great observation about Ofelia and Bod. We mentioned in class how we wish she would have visited the labyrinth more than twice in this film. If she had been in the labyrinth more there would definitely be a great parallel.

  3. I did not even notice the parallels until you mentioned it, but now I definitely agree. The ways in which these types of "border spaces" (I think the graveyard and the labyrinth are both seem like they are places on the border of reality and some type of non-reality) both serve as protective places for the protagonists is interesting. I also agree with Avery about the nature of this "reality".
