Scariest part of the movie

ok, so I wasn't there to discuss Labarinto del Fauno with you guys, and i apologize, but ive got a good, no GREAT excuse. I was interviewing for the position of Entry-Level Bank Examiner with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. They are the foremost banking regulatory agency in the USA.

Here's the regulatory hierarchy
OCC>FDIC>State Regs

anyway, spending time working for a regulatory agency is a MUST for anyone who really wants to be a banker and move up in the ranks. (as i do)
plus, i'll be a federal agent and get to wear a suit and tie all the time, the salary isn't bad either. woot

so yeah, high fives!

Pan's Labyrinth (not really Pan but some other random faun) is a haunting and fantastic movie
this is my favorite scene from the movie,

i wanted ophelia to get eaten. she didnt listen to the faun or the fayries, what a bad child!
and those poor fayries get eaten because of her.

but sincerely, the set is exquisite. Notice the sumptous feast, but no other chairs at the table...
the paintings on the cieling are really scary too. Even, the fireplace is creepy with the teeth like metal grate and eye like exhaust vents. the mound of shoes is a nice detail too.

why is this pale man only hungry for children? that ham with pineapple slices on it would suffice for me.

and seriously, WHAT ARE YOU THINKING OPHELIA? you deserved to get eaten and lucked out. i hope you feel bad about the fayries.

interesting parallels to the story of Persephone and Hades though (it's about time she returned to her mom, Demeter)
also, the cattle of Helios and Odysseus' men
one more but i can't think of it offhand...i'll edit it in when i remember

Moral of this episode, don't eat other people's food or you will get stuck in hell or eaten.

  1. Ah man! You would've loved my ongoing rant in class! I could not get over the fact that she just HAD to eat the grapes...I thought she was going to be different than other children in movies that always disobey, but NO. Ofelia is the same....tsk, tsk. When will those child protagonists learn?

  3. I thought the pale man looked like he could be related to Pinhead and the gang from the Hellraiser movies, he was just creepy looking. Good luck on your job, btw.

  4. Good luck with getting the job! Hate you missed class...it was probably our most energized discussion so far.

Seriously, why did she eat those grapes? And with all that...why pick the grapes? Poor fayries.

I can't figure out why you would pick this scene as your favorite though...it was terrifying. I wouldn't want to be trapped in a secret chamber with a man like that. Definitely not. At least you didn't pick like...bottle bashing in the face scene or something, haha.

  5. Oh, this was one of the most memorable scenes in the movie, I thought. The beats in the music paired at the exact moment when the Pale Man came to life was spot on. It was, in fact, eerie how perfect the suspenseful music was matched with the clacking of the nails when his fingers moved off of the table. Plus, the Pale Man just looks really awkward when he gets up and walks....ever so slow. Soooo slow. If I was in a competitive relay race, I know I would not choose the Pale Man as a team member. So even if Ophelia did end up dying down there, how would the Pale Man have killed and eaten her? Would he have stolen the knife from her and stabbed her to death first? Or would he strangle her with his huge hands, all the while not being able to see because he's using his eye/hands to strangle her to death?
