So, not to ruin the surprise, as I know we're all on the edge of our seats wanting to hear everyone's paper topics...but....
I am considering the topic of immortality as a focus for my paper. I won't go into the details here, I don't want to be repetitive in class. But I am looking for some additional sources/angles to consider that aren't in the books already covered in class.
So, if anyone has any books/movies/anything where the topic of immortality is considered, I am very open to suggestions - that would be so helpful! I want to have a wide variety to pull from, and everyone has such a varied interests that I definitely wanted your input. Thanks!

Since we've already looked at one of his works, the character of Hob Gadling in "Sandman" would work well as a study in immortality-by-choice.
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of immortality I instantly think of vampires, so that could be a start. Also I think of immortality in Greek Mythology. Hope that helps.
ReplyDeleteSo first off, we should obviously establish that there are many different meanings to the word "immortal".
ReplyDeleteImmortal beings can be those that, in fact, live forever. They are immune to death, disease, injury, and age. Or they can exist as eternal beings that can only be killed by another immortal figure (like Katie said, this is typically found in the branches of mythology). Also, we have to consider the possibility of a mere mortal making him or herself become immortal, whether it be through potions, relationships, etc. Thus, immortality can be viewed sometimes as a choice, or as a reward in some cases.
Possible literary works where immortality is a theme could be:
Sauron in Lord of the Rings
Wowbagger in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, a personal favorite. He accidentally turns himself immortal.
There's always good old Freddy Krueger from Nightmare on Elm street
Which also yields Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th
Interview with a Vampire and Blade were both mentioned in class, both classic
King Arthur and the Quest for the Holy Grail involves immortality, in that the reward of the holy grail is immortality
Peter Pan, in a self-chosen way, is immortal
And then of course, various aspects in the Star War series, the Star Trek series, and Andromeda also include bits relating to immortality
What about like the Fountain of Youth, and all of the stories sorrunding that. There is also Dorian in the "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen."
ReplyDeleteWhat a fine list.
