Dissatisfied

This was the first time I had ever seen Pan's Labyrinth. And besides some pretty gruesome parts, enjoyed it. However, at the end of the movie if felt the story was incomplete. Yes, the story is about Ofelia and the movie ties up her story quite nicely. The fate of Ofelia's baby brother is left to the imagination, with some strong suggestions that he is left in the care of Mercedes. I think at the end I wanted conformation that this child Ofelia sacrificed her life for was taken care of. No dialog would be necessary, just a thirty second clip of him safe with Mercedes and Pedro. Did anyone else find this element lacking?

  1. I didn't feel dissatisfied, I suppose, because I really was not invested in Ofelia's brother like I was in Ofelia and Mercedes. He is important, yes, but I didn't take the DVD out of my player wishing there had been more. The thirty second clip would not hurt anything, though, I don't think.

  2. I think that the movie was thorough and non-lacking. I felt like the brother's destiny from then on was to live with Mercedes. But like Sarah said, I don't think a 30 second clip would be too much.

  3. I'm with Katie on this one. I don't really think there was much ambiguity in the end when Ofelia's brother was handed to Mercedes and she told the captain that he would never know his father's name. It seemed pretty clear-cut to me.

  4. I was not dissatisfied with the end regarding the brother, per say, but that doesn't mean I wasn't dissatisfied elsewhere in the movie.

We can all agree that the little brother didn't play a major role whatsoever, we never even know his name. Clearly, being the offspring of the Captain partly casts him into a negative light; having a connection to such a man doesn't exactly make him noble. Sure, the additional clip would have been nice and not entirely out of place, but I think we can all assume that is what happened.

One thing I was generally annoyed with though, was the typical "You flipping idiot, why on earth would you do that!?" feeling you get when watching horror movies and seeing the STUPID things that characters do. The main example from this movie was when Ofelia ate the grapes at the feast during her second task. Really??? I think she was told like only a hundred times to eat or drink anything there, that "the fate of her life depended on it". And then it's like she forgets all these warnings under the presence of creepy, anorexic pale man. I wanted to shake her to death. Obviously, a sense of action and excitement was added to the movie, i just wish that producers didn't always feel the need to fall back on this standard of character stupidity to cause this to happen.
