Some examples not listed in the syllabus include Twilight, the Grimm Fairy Tales, Eragon, the Fable video games, American Gods, Ender's Game, the Crystal Cave, Chronicles of Narnia, Alice in Wonderland, and the tv show Heroes, amongst many, many others.
Fantasy has many different offspring genres, which can easily be confused or taken for actual fantasy works, such as the science fiction genre. For example, would Mary Shelly's Frankenstein be primarily considered science fiction due to the obvious toying with the forces of nature by bringing a creature to life, or would it be primarily considered fantasy?
Also, with fantasy, we have many different subthemes to consider. These include, but are not limited to, supernatural themes (something that happens and you react to it), paranormal magic (magic that is taught, controlled, or explained), and escapism.
Finally, on the topic of my own personal likes and interests regarding fantasy, I would like to say I am the biggest Harry Potter fan you will meet. Even bigger than Kayla Lisenby. I know it's a cliche series to love, but honestly, how can you not?

i would want to join ravenclaw, what about you?
ReplyDeleteOh, correction. You, Natalie Beck, are not a bigger Harry Potter fan than I am. Absolutely impossible. I mean, who re-read all of Deathly Hallows on Christmas Day? I think we know the answer to this question. Although I do think we should get my Harry Potter trivia game (the actual board game) and play to the death - just throw out the movie cards, because those suck. I think this is a good use of our time - who needs sleep?
ReplyDeleteBesides, you? like something cliche? Never.
Oh, and to Zach, I would be a Ravenclaw...or maybe a Slytherin...I do have that underlying streak of evil, haha.
ReplyDeleteI am pretty sure I'd end up in Slytherin. I am too much of a claw-my-way-to-the-top individual...and a control freak. I would like to be in Ravenclaw, though.
ReplyDeleteRavenclaw, forget embracing the inner nerd. I'm an outwards one. Although I do have Hufflepuff like qualities...
ReplyDeleteAnd Kayla, why was I not aware you had this game?? And better yet, why have we never played? I challenge you. Loser has to wear a cape to class.
Of course I have this game. I'll get it when I go home soon. And it's on.
ReplyDeleteI think you'll be wearing the cape. Mostly because of your Hufflepuff qualities. And you already own one....

ReplyDeleteIts cliche but I would definitely want to be in Gryffindor. I would probably be in Ravenclaw though.

I don't think it's cliche, per say, to want to be in Gryffindor. I mean, everyone, on some level, wants to be in that house. I think that's because JKR just wrote the books with the intention of that house seeming most desirable. I mean, it produced many outstanding wizards, it appeared to have the widest range of accepted qualities, and overall, that's the house we as readers know most about, so naturally it would seem desirable to us as well.
ReplyDeleteI don't mean to be rude by busting in on your HP discussion, but I have the HP scene it game ( i guess that is what you mean by trivia). My brothers don't like to play with me because yell the answers. And I would probably be a Ravenclaw, just because I'm not brave like a Gryffindor.
