Sex, Potions, and Rock n' Roll?

In a recent article I stumbled upon in anticipation for the next movie installment of Harry Potter, Director David Yates speaks on his take of the film and what he tried to really showcase.

He claims this film is much more sexualized than the previous one (where our biggest romantic moment came with a sickeningly  awkward kiss....) and that although sex itself isn't shown (thank god...talk about unsettling), we will apparently be able to tell its there.

Ok, granted I get that the characters are getting older, and we can't have them just eat chocolate frogs and sharing hugs forever, but i never got the impression that the sixth book was in anyway classified in the "sexual explosion" category. Yes, they were clearly in their teenage prime at 16 in this installment, but i would never say i felt it was ever "quite naughty".

I call shenanigans.

I am obviously aware of the whole "treat movies as separate entities of their novel counterparts" idea. I agree with this, and I have always been generally annoyed with those that seek to pick apart miniscule details of the movies that don't agree with the books...but I feel this is a little bit bigger than that. It's like presenting a whole different feel and atmosphere to the story, when in fact, while a little of this sexy spunk is needed to show maturity, it should not be an overriding and overbearing movie.

Is this just me? Did I misinterpret HPHBP in this regard; did i miss this apparently obvious sexual definition? Or is this just Yates and WB working together to increase the moo-la flow at the end of it all? Afterall, sex does pay. And its not like there are millions of girls out there that would only be too eager to dish out their bucks to see Dan or Rupert turnin' it on...

I would like to hope the later....the easier answer to accept

  1. I think I will have to read HBP again. He said that this one is much lighter and playful. From what I remember I would have to disagree, there is alot that happens in this book that I feel like is dark. Plus all of the trailers I have seen do not look playful. I really hope they don't make it cheesy.

  2. Just like you said, sex sells. After all Dan and Rupert have become idolized sex symbols for thousands of girls, so you can hardly blame the movie makers from wanting to play on that fact. It sounds like a ploy to make even more money off these movies to me, which I have to admit is very disappointing. I certainly don't remember the book being that overtly sexual, but perhaps I should read it again looking for it.

  3. I totally agree. I think that HPHBP did an excellent job of displaying maturing teenagers with "emerging romantic relationships," as Wikipedia says, without letting it overshadow the dangers and disappointments they are encountering. While it is definitely important to show these relationships, it would be a misstep to over emphasize them. I think all signs point to a concern for increased revenues instead a concern for creating the most appropriate atmosphere in the movie.

  4. Well that's encouraging that I'm not too crazy by thinking this sexual overtone may be a bit much and that it wasn't shown in the canon. I'll still have to go back and read the sixth book again though, for personal assurance.

  5. I do remember people "snogging" in the book but nothing too sexual.

  6. Hokay, so it looks like I'll be playing the devil's advocate here. The 6th book, to me, has a LOT of sexual tension/nature in between the lines. Between all of the jealousy that Harry, Ron and Hermione possess as they find separate "hook-ups", it's a wonder why they'd be jealous if things weren't going on. It's different when you're in middle school, back when holding hands was like cheating that merited the death penalty. They're 16-year-olds now. I think that Yates's "quite naughty" comment only stood to set the movie apart; in other words, we'll be seeing more sexuality than we ever have before. It's only relative to the movie franchise, not necessarily naughty as we see it in relation to other "naughtier" movies. While I support the fact that sexuality is more prominent in this movie, I agree with everyone in hoping that these angsty subplots don't overshadow the bigger picture at hand.

I don't think he'll destroy the book, but I'm not going to say that with full confidence after seeing his OotP work. Trailers are fine and dandy, but as most of you probably know, an amazing trailer can still mean a craptastic movie if they show all the good parts in it and force us to watch the remaining hour and a half with gritted teeth.

  7. True about the trailer part. I do like thought that they haven't showed anything to do with the actual "Half Blood Prince". I know there are probably a lot of people who don't read the books so it will be a surprise to them. I was watching the trailer with my brother and he asked if Voldemort was the HBP. I told him to read the book.
