Though Wintersmith has numerous elements to love, I think boffo is by far my favorite. One of Prachett's great strengths is his ability to translate metaphorical concepts into existent reality, and boffo is a great example. Everyone performs boffo in their life, but it's not often people are forced to consider the hows and why of their own boffo 9and more importantly0, it's negative consequences.
What were other people's favorite elements/set pieces (and Prachett has lots of those)?

I know that we discussed it a briefly last class, but I really have been amused with the concepts of First Sight and Second and Third Thoughts.
ReplyDeleteFirst Sight-the ability to see 'what is really there'
Second Thoughts-'the thoughts you think about the way you think'
Third Thoughts-the thoughts you think about the way you think about the way you think
In the past two weeks or so, I actually find myself reflecting back on my thoughts and asking myself "Oh, wait. Was that a Third Thought?" (I'm a nerd...) So far, I have only convinced myself that I've gotten first sight and second thoughts down...third thoughts are just so incredibly tricky...then again only witches can have them I believe. ...Oh well, it's not like I haven't waved a wooden stick around and shouted 'Lumos', despite the fact that I am clearly not a witch. But there was no harm in checking...
I loved Boffo. That was one of my favorite parts of the book, especially when Annagramma comes out in the wicked witch mask. And when Mrs. Treason sees all of the villagers outside her house the day after the funeral and she was like 'mess up my hair, get my worst cloak.' I also thought that Horace the Cheese was hilarious! The idea that Tiffany created a cheese that had a personality is so funny. And then he joined up with the Feegles.
ReplyDeleteI think Boffo was definitely my favorite concept in the books. It's really such an obvious concept, you know? We all are constantly buying things that make us appear one way or another....I mean, generally it's because we like the things we are buying, but still, it's what they do. Once I started reading about Boffo though, I started to realize just how true that concept is. I kind of wish we had catelogues to order our "personality" out of, haha.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Natalie too though - those First, Second, and Third thoughts...love those. I also found myself thinking about which thoughts I was thinking in :)
