Messin' With Sasquatch

From the story "Up the Fire Road", we are presented with our first encounter so far in this course with the alleged ape-man being of Sasquatch. My knowledge of such a creature is, well, very limited. I have always regarded the Sasquatch as a mythical creature. Just as I view the Loch Ness Monster, dinosaurs still existing on earth, and the Tooth Fairy.

However, clearly this is not the case with everyone out there. A look at wiki's definition of Sasquatch yields an extensive description on the beast, down to its weight and behavior tendencies. These result from numerous reported sightings that have taken place over the whole nation for years. I don't want to say that I believe in the Sasquatch, but given the fact that so many detailed sightings have taken place over the course of decades, it does make one wonder if we are all just being, perhaps ignorant(?) to fantastical elements that very well could exist in reality....why should there be any reason for them not to, after all?? (Now I probably sound crazy by saying that....)

Here's the Wiki link:

Also, even more interesting than that link, I present you with the SIS website.
That's right, the Sasquatch Information Society. It is a headquarters website including pictures (which are hilarious....photoshop much?), interviews with dedicated researchers in this area, and a sightings chart.

Alabama has an alleged 51.....that puts us second behind Washington with 499.
WIN.

  1. Your mention of an ape-man being reminded me of a Yeti. Now althought Sasquatch and Yeti may not be the same thing, I think they might share the distant cousins connection being that they are both creatures that are claimed to be roaming certain mountainous or forestry regions. The latest example of Yeti or the Abominable Snowman that I have seen in multimedia culture was in the latest Mummy film, the third installation, which of course was not as good as the first two but to be expected as so.

The one thing that I do not understand in this chase after these mythical/legendary creatures is that these creatures are portrayed to be monsters, right? Creatures to be feared because of their size and demeanor? I know that finding out the truth about certain the certain unknown is enticing, but why? Why willingly chase after or rather hunt these creatures (should they exist) that are known to be rash and often angry and rather big in size? It's kind of like chasing after a shark in its natural habit in the ocean knowing well off that the shark might just mistake you for food and devour you.

  2. Well Natalie, I know how much you love comments, so here you go.

First, I can't believe you would ever doubt the Sasquatch is a real creature. A certain person whose name starts with C was a part of our lives for a very long time, and I think that should be proof enough.

I can't really say I do or do not believe it exists. It's a tough call. I mean, it seems pretty unreasonable, but at the same time...there's a lot of "proof" and a lot of people really believe in it.

Also, in response to Jennifer, I think that the enticement of the Sasquatch chase is both about the danger and about the reputation that you would gain if you were able to prove the truth about something the world has doubted for so long. I mean, in a world where it seems that everything out there has either been discovered or proved false, it would be kind of cool to make this kind of discovery.

Oh, and second behind Washington? Well, that's not too surprising. We know Washington is full of all sorts of "mythical" creatures.... :)
